Thank you for your interest in The Sherwood School

The basic principle of The Sherwood School is that when children are given “the gift of time” to develop at their own appropriate individual rate, they become healthy and happy individuals.

Children should have opportunities to learn by doing, gaining positive feelings about themselves along the way. They need to develop responsibility for their own actions, behaviors, and learning, and not to be dependent upon control by adults. Play is the work of the child. Our children are encouraged to question and choose in their play, discovering the joy of learning.

Each child is a unique person with individual timing and patterns of growth, as well as a distinct personality, learning style, and family background. Learning in young children is the result of interaction between the child’s thoughts and experiences with materials, ideas, and people. Our philosophy blends Piagetian and Montessori best practices.
